Welcome to your June update from the World Muscle Society

This month I am proud to bring you some important Congress reminders as well as an update on our mission and values as a Society.

Back at the end of March this year, the Executive Board met in London. The two day agenda was packed with important discussions. We spoke about the need for a consistent education programme, how we support early career researchers and about what is important to the WMS in 2023 and beyond.

One of the decisions we made is that each year at the Congress we will decide and reveal the destination for the Congress four years ahead. This means that in Charleston, we’ll hear bids and announce the proposed destination for WMS 2027. Submit your request to bid now - you can read more below.

A crucial discussion in the Executive Board meeting was around our mission and values. Many people are familiar with the three Es, but these hadn't changed since the mid 1990s. We used the results of the member survey from earlier in the year to inform what the WMS should represent now and for the future. You can read what we agreed below.

The new mission and values reflect your feedback, so I really hope they resonate with you.

And finally, look out for the EDI survey, which will land in your inbox soon.

I wish you the very best.

News
At the Executive Board Meeting in London earlier this year, the Executive Board discussed the results of the member survey and how that feedback could be incorporated into the WMS mission and values.

The selected values are:
  • educational
  • scientific
  • collaborative
  • inclusive
You can read more about how we will know we are reflecting our values on our website.

We were pleased to host an LGMD and other Muscular Dystrophies Nomenclature Meeting in London last week. The discussions were fascinating and in-depth, ensuring that everyone's voices were heard. A public consultation will be shared via the WMS website in due course.

We recently supported The Moroccan Society of Neurophysiology (MSN) in the creation of a workshop to promote and educate young scientists from African countries, providing an opportunity for them to present their data and experience gained during the Cairo Congress. At that session, young scientists from Egypt and Lebanon presented abstracts and posters to a critical audience.

WMS Members working on research on titin (TTN) related muscle or heart disorders can apply for the Team Titin international grant funding of $50,000. The international research grant funding will be awarded to support meaningful research that could translate into a treatment or care optimisation for those living with, caring for, or researching titin related muscle or heart disorders.

More details, including how to apply, are on our website.
