Welcome to your February update from the World Muscle Society

This month, we're on the verge of opening registrations for WMS 2024. We have been able to publish the summary programme, including this year's topics. We will, of course, continue to add to the programme as we select speakers and finalise details.

Alongside registration, we will also open our abstract submissions. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help review abstracts. You will be hearing from the team very soon with instructions.

This year, we have added some sustainability topics to our abstract submission process. Our Sustainability Committee is keen to get the conversation started and encourages you to consider these when submitting abstracts. The sub-topics are:

  • Sustainable practices in healthcare facilities (energy efficiency, waste management).
  • Sustainable materials or approaches in orthopaedics, research etc.
  • Environmental impacts (air-quality, heat waves etc) on patients' health

I am curious to see what our Congress delegates submit on these subjects.

This month we also celebrated International Day for Women and Girls in Science. I was proud to see my own team at the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre included in our social media coverage. It's a team that is 75% female.

If you missed the posts on social media, I encourage you to take a look back through and watch some of the interesting and enlightening interviews with Lindsay Alfano, Meredith James and Linda Lowes on the field of physiotherapy in neuromuscular disorders. The links are in the story below.

I wish you the very best.

We are proud to announce that the WMS is now an Associated Partner of the European Neuromuscular Centre (ENMC).

The WMS involvement with the ENMC is enabling the organisation to develop new long standing projects and secure the funding of condition-specific workshops and themed workshops.

Visit our website for the full story.

On Sunday 11th February, we joined scientific organisations around the world to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

At the WMS, we used the day to showcase some of the phenomenal women working across the field of neuromuscular disorders.

You can see our posts on our social media channels or by visiting our website for the full story.

Thursday 29th February is Rare Disease Day. Many of the conditions our members specialise in are rare diseases and we would love to share your stories.

If you would like to feature in our social media coverage for Rare Disease Day 2024, please send us an email with a short summary of your story or patient case study along with an accompanying photo.

Could you host WMS 2028? We are now welcoming proposals for WMS Congress host cities.

Our 2028 Congress will follow visits to Prague this year, Vienna in 2025, Hiroshima in 2026 and Helsinki in 2027.

For full details on how to apply to be a host city, visit the Request for Proposals page of our website.

Dates For Your Diary
The next Myology Café will take place virtually on Thursday 28th March at 2pm BST. Save the date!

We look forward to confirming the topic for discussion and the identity of our guest speaker closer to the time.

Myology Café dates for the rest of the year are available on the events page of the website and we'll add details of guest speakers as they are confirmed.

Jobs
We have several relevant job opportunities in the field on our website now.

Please use the form on here to submit a job posting.

The job posting will be reviewed before being published and also shared on WMS social media platforms.
