Welcome to your April update from the World Muscle Society

Our 2024 Congress in Prague in October is set to be our biggest yet. As you may have seen, the deadline for abstract submissions passed last week and we had a record number of abstract submissions, fellowship applications and Congress registrations.

Now the process begins of reviewing the 700+ abstracts and selecting the ones for poster presentations, short oral presentations and oral presentations as part of our WMS 2024 programme. The abstracts we receive each year are invariably of a high standard, which helps us make sure our annual Congress remains the pre-eminent global event for people working in the field of neuromuscular disorders.

I hope to see many of you in Prague, but remember, if you can't attend in person, we continue to provide a fully hybrid Congress, with all scientific content available to view virtually. Register to attend virtually or in person before 5th June to take advantage of our early bird prices.

Once again, our monthly newsletter features a range of stories from across the WMS. Those of you who haven't yet attended a Myology Café might like to read Matthew Alexander's round-up of our March event.

The Myology Café series is just one initiative from our Myology Developments Across the World Committee. That Committee is also responsible for one of our regular interview series and you can find the latest installment below.

And we're still accepting bids to host our 2028 Congress. If you would like to submit a proposal, please read the guidelines on our website

As always, we rely on members, to share news about what you're working on so we can tell others. Please do contact us

I wish you the very best.

WMS President

News

Our second Myology Café of the year took place on Thursday 28th March. These bi-monthly virtual meetings provide opportunities for members and non-members to get together and learn about the latest developments in our field.

At the March meeting, Dr Matthew Alexander shared his experiences of attending the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) 2024 Clinical and Scientific Conference. You can read his summary of the meeting on our website

Our latest interview from our Myology Developments Across the World Committee is with Professor Saleh Omairi, from the College of Medicine at Warith Al-Anbiyaa University in Kut, Iraq.

Professor Omairi describes his love of seeing interesting cases and helping a wide spectrum of the community to improve their quality of life.

You can read the full interview on our website

Did you know that as a WMS member you have exclusive access to the scientific content from previous Congresses?

We have created a portal featuring all the presentations from every Congress and Pre-Congress Teaching Course since 2021. We have the videos because we introduced the virtual and then the hybrid Congress format and wanted to make them available to all our members.

You can find all the presentations on our website.

Could you host WMS 2028? We are still welcoming proposals for WMS Congress host cities.

Our 2028 Congress will follow visits to Prague this year, Vienna in 2025, Hiroshima in 2026 and Helsinki in 2027.

For full details on how to apply to be a host city, visit the Request for Proposals page of our website. The deadline is 15th July 2024.

Dates For Your Diary
If you have been inspired by our write-up of the March Myology Café and would like to join the next one, save the date for our May Café. It takes place on Thursday 23rd May from 2-3pm (BST).

Dr. Diego Rosselli from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Colombia will be talking about the high-cost of drug access in neuromuscular disorders.

Register now and join via Zoom.

The Australasian Neuromuscular Network (ANN) is a group of clinicians, allied health, researchers, patient organisations and representatives of pharmaceutical companies who share the goal of improving the care of people affected by neuromuscular diseases across Australia and New Zealand.

The ANN Congress will take place at the Sheraton Melbourne Hotel in the heart of Melbourne, Australia from 27th – 29th May 2024.

Find full details on our website.
