Dr Riyad El-Khoury is an Assistant Professor - Neuromuscular Pathology Scientist - in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine department at the American University of Beirut Medical Center with a joint appointment in the Neurology department. He is the Head of Neuromuscular Pathology Diagnostic Laboratory. His research interest focus on the role of mitochondria in macrophages mediated peripheral and neuro inflammation.

I graduated as physician in Argentina, 1989, but I have started my academic career in histopathology as an undergraduate student in 1985, (which was later important to allow me becoming a muscular pathologist). I was resident in Pathology (1990-1991), became a Neuroscience PhD in 1994 at Wales University in UK, and later became a clinical neurologist in Chile (1998-2001). At this stage I focused my career in the neuromuscular field, becoming EMG and NCS specialist, to pursue a Diploma in Myology at the Institut de Myologie/UPMC Paris, France in 2006. Further I became the Head of the Neuromuscular Unit of the Hospital Clínico Universidad de Chile. I currently practice as clinician, electrophysiologist and muscle pathology in the field of NMD. I have contributed with the research and education in the field since 2000, with different research lines mainly focused in LGMD and dysferlinopathies, both clinical and fundamental research, as well as contributing with the identification of diseases never describe before in Chile, bringing novel methodologies for diagnosis of NM diseases (RM), and establishing the incidence and prevalence of different forms of ailments previously not identified in the region. We contribute permanently with the education of new specialists, promoting educational activities in the field, researching and publishing new knowledge in neuromuscular disorders.

I enjoyed Neurology the most during my rotations and completed Pediatric residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham , AL, then Pediatric Neurology training at the University of Tennessee, in Memphis TN, and finally Neuromuscular Training at The University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas , TX. I am the Pediatric Neuromuscular Clinic Co-Director since 2019. My practice is both General Neurology and Neuromuscular Medicine.

Dr Teresinha Evangelista is a Board-certified neurologist and neuropathologist with long standing clinical and research expertise in neuromuscular disorders. Dr Teresinha Evangelista was the president of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Neuromuscular Diseases from 2009 to 2013. In 2018, she became the coordinator of the European Reference Network for rare neuromuscular diseases EURO-NMD. In 2018, she joined the « Unité de Morphologie Neuromusculaire; Institut de Myologie - Sorbonne Université, GHU Pitié-Salpêtrière ».

Dr Roula Ghaoui (MD, PhD) is an Adult Consultant Neurologist and an Early Career Research Fellow at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) in South Australia. She has set up a neuromuscular and neurogenetics service receiving referrals from around South Australia. She is a Chief investigator on several clinical trials investigating treatments for the mitochondrial and inflammatory myopathies. Dr Ghaoui has been on several medical advisory board panels for the treatment of rare disease including adults with spinal muscular atrophy and Pompe disease. She is on the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Brain Foundation and a member of the Clinical Trials and Research Committee of the Mitochondrial Medical Network in Australia. She had been the state co-lead for the neuromuscular flagship arm of the Australian Genomics Health Alliance project (AGHA). Her clinical and research interests are in the diagnosis and management of the limb-girdle muscular dystrophies.
