On Sunday 11th February, we joined scientific organisations around the world to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Created by the United Nations in 2015, the day is a reminder that women and girls play a critical role in science and technology communities and that their participation should be strengthened.
Although Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields are widely regarded as critical to national economies, so far most countries, no matter their level of development, have not achieved gender equality in STEM.
At the WMS, we used the day to showcase some of the phenomenal women working across the field of neuromuscular disorders. Throughout the day, we shared clips from an interview with Lindsay Alfano, Meredith James and Linda Lowes, which took place during WMS 2023. Lindsay, Meredith and Linda are all physiotherapists working in our field and shared their thoughts on the current and developing role of physiotherapy, the adaptations over recent years and the value of in-person consultations.
At the WMS, women make up just over half our membership and we are proud to share their contributions to our field.
