Meet the Myology Expert: Dr. Ichizo Nishino

Dr. Nishino, a member of the WMS Executive Board, has been helping to establish myology diagnostic systems in Asia and Egypt for 20 years.

He started regularly visiting Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand 20 years ago and Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsing, Taiwan 14 years ago, for both he is now appointed as a visiting professor.

He also regularly visits Cairo, Egypt, where Dr. Rasha El Sherif, also a WMS Member, who studied at NCNP, and is now running the Myo-Care Neuromuscular Center.

Dr. Nishino’s lab functions as a referral center for muscle disease in Japan and provides myopathological and genetic diagnosis for more than 70% of muscle disease patients in the country, and all physicians that come to his lab as a research fellow are exposed to many cases and thus trained for muscle pathology and genetic diagnosis.

Dr Nishino has inspired many of his former fellows, who are now working as key myologists in their own countries/regions.
