PhD Student Opportunity - Brain-Heart Interconnectome

Lochmüller Research Group | CHEO RI

The Lochmüller Research Group are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join their team at the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute (CHEO RI). The project, part of the recently funded Brain-Heart Initiative at uOttawa, will involve working with advanced cell models to perform drug screens, biomarker studies, and mechanistic investigations into Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 (DM1). Candidates with previous laboratory experience, particularly in cell culture and molecular biology are particularly encouraged to apply.

Research Environment

The Lochmüller Research Group specializes in conducting scientific, genetic, and clinical investigations into neuromuscular disorders, while also providing clinical support for individuals affected by these conditions. Our primary objective is to unravel the reasons behind genetic variations in the human genome give rise to these often debilitating, and occasionally life-threatening disorders that impact the muscles and nervous system. Employing a translational approach from laboratory research to practical applications, the Lochmüller research group identifies genetic defects in patients through in-depth phenotyping and next-generation sequencing. Subsequently, they delve into understanding molecular pathways using cell and animal models before progressing to preclinical and clinical trials testing innovative targeted therapies. The CHEO Research Institute is located in Ottawa, sharing a campus with the University of Ottawa, The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and the CHEO hospital. This arrangement fosters valuable collaboration among various groups, facilitating the exchange of resources and equipment. Ottawa provides a vibrant, inclusive, cost-effective, and friendly atmosphere for both academic pursuits and daily life. Additionally, the city benefits from excellent transportation links, both internally and to other Canadian cities.

Entry Requirements

Candidates are expected to hold or be about to obtain a MSc degree in a related subject/area. In addition, to selection by the Lochmüller Research group, candidates will need to apply to The University of Ottawa CMM program and fulfil their entry requirements.
