Stanford University's 5th Annual Neuromuscular Conference: Spinal Muscular Atrophy & Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy-Lessons Learned in Genetic Treatments

New advances in genetic treatments require continuing medical education for all clinicians caring for individuals with neuromuscular disorders to assure that all eligible patients receive treatments quickly, and to optimize outcomes. Genetic treatments, supplemental treatments, regenerative approaches, and progress toward fetal therapy make this an exciting moment to discuss clinical-decision making.  Our goal is to improve use of these powerful new treatments and optimize patient management by including physicians, therapists, nurses, and all providers whether or not they see patients as part of specialized neuromuscular centers.

This in-person 2-day conference (with an option for virtual livestreaming of all formal presentations as well as interactive learning sessions for in-person participants) has the following goals: (1) review and understand new treatment developments over the past year; (2) examine novel insights and clinical reasoning that combine treatments and integrate rehabilitative management; and (3) use specific features of SMA & DMD to model optimal care, helping all providers understand evidence-based medical and rehabilitation approaches, whether or not they are members of specialized Neuromuscular care teams.

The conference will include an educational lecture series providing an overview of the new advances in SMA & DMD disease modifying therapies including gene correction and other course-modifying treatments, approaches to augment function that can be combined with genetic treatments, and developing regenerative and fetal treatments. Complex topics including, disability rights, fatigue and managing orthopedic conditions will be discussed.  Didactics will be followed by interactive break-out sessions including clinical cases that exemplify a variety of medical and rehabilitative interventions.  These sessions will include opportunities for shared discussion on clinical decision-making for broad and complex phenotypes that clarify the perspectives of multi-disciplinary providers.

At the end of this conference, participants will understand the use of genetic treatments, supplementary functional improvements, and other medical and rehabilitative approaches for SMA & DMD that provide models for optimizing neuromuscular care. Attendees will recognize opportunities to optimize clinical interventions and outcomes.
