Corinne Horlings completed her training as a neurologist at the Radboud University Medical Center Nijmegen, the Netherlands and medical university in Innsbruck, Austria. For her PhD she worked at the University Clinic in Basel, Schwitzerland. She wrote her PhD-Thesis on falls and balance in patients with neuromuscular disorders. Her research focused mainly on clinical and imaging biomarkers in neuromuscular disorders, especially FSHD, OPMD and myotonic dystrophy. Corinne now works as a neurologist at the medical university in Innsbruck, where she is the deputy medical lead of the neurology clinical trial research center.

Saskia Houwen is rehabilitation physician since 2013. Her expertise is on neuromuscular disorders and rehabilitation. Focusing on life span medicine inclusive a broad scale of symptoms in different disease stages, on transitioning into adulthood, rehabilitation interventions, females with dystrophinopathy and barriers in social participation. The research questions arise from the clinical work in the Amalia children’s hospital and the outpatient department for people with NMD in transition. Besides, she is principal investigator on clinical trials to investigate new medicine for patients with DMD. The organization of care is a point of her attention, where she focuses on improving national multidisciplinary care for adults with DMD.

Dr. Liewluck is a Professor of Neurology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. He obtained his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University in Thailand, and pursued a neuromuscular research fellowship at the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry of Japan under the directorship of Professor Ichizo Nishino. He furthered his expertise with a neurology residency at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, followed by dual fellowships in Clinical Neurophysiology (EMG) and Muscle Diseases at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester under the directorship of the late Professor Andrew G. Engel. Dr. Liewluck holds board certifications in Neurology, Neuromuscular Medicine, and Clinical Neuromuscular Pathology. His clinical practice and research focus on a comprehensive understanding of muscle diseases, particularly acquired myopathies. He has authored over 130 peer-reviewed articles and nine book chapters and co-edited one book. Dr. Liewluck is actively involved in professional organizations such as the WMS, AAN, ANA, AANEM, IMACS, and IMyoS. He served as chair of the ANA Neuromuscular Disease Special Interest Group in 2023, vice chair of the AAN Neuromuscular Section from 2023 to 2025, and vice chair of the IMACS Scientific Committee from 2023 to 2025. Dr. Liewluck currently chairs the Abstract Review Committee of the AANEM and is an associate board member of IMyoS.

Dr. Tahseen Mozaffar is a Professor of Neurology and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Director of the Division of Neuromuscular Disorders. Dr. Mozaffar serves as chair of one of the biomedical committees and is the Associate Director for the Center for Translational Sciences Award (CTSA) at University of California, Irvine. He is the Principal Investigator for UCI-NEXT, the NeuroNEXT award to the University of California, Irvine, one of 25 such NeuroNEXT sites funded by the NINDS/NIH. He is also the Lead Investigator for a multicenter NIH/NIAMS funded Natural History Study in sIBM (INSPIRE-IBM), which started April 2021. He graduated medical school at the Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan in 1989 and trained in Neurology and Neuromuscular Disorders at Washington University/Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Mozaffar has been at UC Irvine since 2000 where he has built an internationally recognized clinical and research program in Neuromuscular Disorders. He is actively involved in clinical and translational research in Neuromuscular Disorders, including currently serving as Principal Site Investigator on over a dozen clinical trials in myasthenia gravis, rare and ultra-rare myopathies and in immune myopathies. He has co-authored over 190 peer-reviewed publications and has authored or co-authored over a dozen book chapters and invited reviews. As an expert in these rare and ultra-rare myopathies, he is actively sought as an advisor by pharmaceutical companies for trial design and identifying disease targets. He is the Director of the nationally recognized Annual UC Irvine Neuromuscular Colloquium, now in its 10th year of existence and Director of the Annual Neuromuscular Pathology Colloquium, now in its 5th year.

The society needs greater representation by women at the Executive/Leadership level and could do more to grow and develop emerging/junior researchers. There is a lot of financial support and the training course is wonderful but more could be done around mentoring, career development.

Volker was trained as a paediatric neurologist at the universities of Düsseldorf and Essen. He wrote his PhD thesis on Duchenne muscular dystrophy and worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Iowa/USA. He has a long-standing interest in mechanisms of genetic muscle diseases, with research using cell and animal models. His current research also involves the application of muscle imaging and next generation sequencing. He is a principal investigator for a number of natural history and interventional trials, the director of the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre and deputy dean of Newcastle University’s Translational and Clinical Research Institute. He is an author on >450 peer-reviewed publications.
