Two international projects have received funding from the WMS in the latest round of project proposals.

We award funding twice a year, in May and December, for proposals submitted by our members that support our mission and values. This funding is a demonstration of our commitment to developing the field of neuromuscular disorders through clinical research and patient care.

The latest projects to receive financial support from the WMS are SOLANE and SciFam.

SOLANE

The fifth Congress of the Latin American Society of Neuromuscular Diseases (SOLANE) will take place in Mexico City from 29th-31st May 2025. It aims to bring together specialists, researchers and healthcare professionals to share the latest advances in the diagnosis, treatment and management of neuromuscular diseases across Latin America. In doing so, it hopes to foster collaboration among experts from different countries; promote education and updates on new therapies and technologies, create a space for discussion on challenges in patient care, and encourage scientific research in the region.

Organisers expect around 450 attendees from all over the globe, not just Latin America. The WMS funding will help cover the costs of travel and accommodation for three WMS speakers, invest in recording the Congress so the content can be made available to a wider audience and sponsor three poster prizes, each including a year of WMS membership.

SOLANE organisers have committed to using any excess funding from the Congress to promote participation of young professionals in the following year’s meeting and to promote educational activities within the region.

SciFam

The 2025 Scientific and Family Conference (SciFam) will take place from 1st-5th August 2025 in Philadelphia USA, bringing together more than 400 stakeholders from around the world in congenital muscular dystrophy, nemaline myopathy, and titinopathy.

The event includes a two-day family conference and a 1.5 day scientific symposium. The family conference offers the opportunity for the patient community to learn about the latest medical guidance and research, and for researchers and clinicians to connect with affected individuals and their families, to not only answer their questions, but to help inform their work. For families attending SciFam the first time, most have never been in the presence of another affected individual traveling a similar journey or living with the same diagnosis. The connections made among those in the patient community at SciFam are life-long and life changing.

The scientific symposium features presentations and discussion for researchers and clinicians working in CMD, NM, and/or Titin.

The WMS funding will support travel and accommodation expenses for four WMS speakers, SciFam organisers have also requested support from the WMS in spreading the word about the event to members.

If you are organising an event that would benefit from WMS funding, you can find out more about the project proposal submission process on our website. The deadline for the next round of applications is 22nd September 2025.
