Welcome to your September update from the World Muscle Society

With just days to go until we meet again, this time in Prague, Czechia, for WMS 2024, I wanted to bring you some important WMS updates.

The first important thing to mention is that this time next year we will be holding our Executive Board elections. The elections take place every three years. To qualify as a candidate, you must have been a member of the WMS for the previous 12 months.

As many of our memberships run annually, if you are interested in helping shape the future of the WMS by standing for election to the Executive Board, it's worth checking your membership status.

Many members of our current Executive Board will be attending WMS 20024 in Prague, so please take the opportunity to talk to them about their experiences if you are interested in putting yourself forward. We will be sharing more information nearer the time.

To help all delegates navigate the Congress, we have created our Congress Guide. You'll find a link to the Guide in the WMS 2024 section of this newsletter and I recommend you take a look. We are also sharing our Duchenne Awareness Day story with you along with another member interview and a summary of the recent AOMC-JMS Conference, which we supported through our Project Proposals process. It's a useful reminder that there is always a lot going on across the WMS.

I hope to see many of you in Prague and look forward to hearing about what you are all working on.

I wish you the very best.

WMS President

News

On 7th September we celebrated World Duchenne Awareness Day. So many of our members are working to find ways to improve the diagnosis, care, treatment and outcomes for patients diagnosed with Duchenne and Becker muscular Dystrophy.

We interviewed some of our members about the work they're doing and their hopes for patients with DMD. You can read the full article on our website

Ana Topf is originally from Argentina and now works at the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre in Newcastle Upon Tyne in the UK, so she brings a unique perspective to the state of neuromuscular disorders around the world.

In our latest member interview, Ana describes what she loves most about her work as well as what she's finding challenging.

You can read the full interview on our website.

The WMS proudly supported the AOMC-JMS 2024 Conference in Nara, Japan earlier this month. WMS Executive Board member, Ichizo Nishino, chaired the Conference and several other WMS Executive Board members also presented to the audience of more than 500 delegates from across Asia and Oceania.

You can read the full report from the Conference on our website.

Dates For Your Diary
If you would like to hear more about the AOMC-JMS meeting, join us for our September Myology Café on Thursday 26th September at 2pm (BST). We will be joined by Ichizo Nishino, who will share more details of the recent Conference in Japan.

As always, you will be able to use Wordly for live translation in your preferred language.

To register to join the virtual Café, visit our website and sign up.
