Welcome to your November newsletter from the World Muscle Society

It is a very great honour to be writing to you for the first time as the WMS President. As you will have seen in our General Assembly update last month, the new Executive Board of the World Muscle Society met for the first time at WMS 2025 in Vienna. We welcomed eight (50%) new members, thanked seven departing members, and selected the Executive Officers and Programme Committee Chair for the next three years.

With all these new faces there are plenty of ideas and projects that we look forward to bringing to reality in the coming months. I want to emphasise the strong democratic process at every single step. The number of candidates for every position underlines the huge interest of members to serve the WMS and the understanding of everyone that the election process is open and fair. You can read more about the makeup of the new WMS Executive Board in the news article linked below.

For those of you who didn't join us in Vienna, or who had to leave before our Saturday morning sessions, I wanted to bring you details of our 2025 prizewinners. Our Prize Committee, chaired by Marco Savarese, had a hard time deciding on who our winners should be, given the high standard of the science presented at WMS 2025. You can find out more about who the winners were using the link below.

And in our final section on Congress news, Congress delegates participated in our legacy tokens initiative once again. We are donating £10,000 to local good causes in Vienna. You can find out more about the charities we're supporting and how the votes turned into cash using the link to the story below.

Look out for the link to the WMS 2025 photo library on your WMS membership page. Our photographer captured all our Congress events, and members have exclusive access to the photo libraries from all previous Congresses.

Away from Congress news, the previous WMS Executive Board had a series of discussions about making it easier to find and get in touch with other members. We know some other societies have directories of their members and have been looking into doing something similar at the WMS. We felt it would be a good way of breaking down barriers and supporting collaboration.

In order for your details to appear in the directory, you need to "opt-in" through your member account. On your membership page, select the "Members list" link and at the top of the page that opens, click the button that says "I want to be displayed on the Membership Directory". Your name will then appear in the WMS Membership Directory. We hope many of our members will opt in.

I look forward to serving as your President and to hearing from you about our various WMS initiatives.

With best wishes,

Laurent Servais
WMS President

The new WMS Executive Board

The new WMS 2025 Executive Board met for the first time in Vienna, Austria on Tuesday 7 October. There are several new faces on the Board and we said goodbye to several long-standing Board members, to whom we are very grateful.

Watch our 30th anniversary film
Delegates at WMS 2025 were treated to the first screening of our special 30th anniversary film. Now, before we share it on social media, we're bringing it to WMS members. Look out for familiar faces and Congress highlights from across the last 30 years.

WMS 2025 prizewinners

On Saturday 11 October, we proudly presented our Congress prizewinners with their certificates in a special ceremony at WMS 2025.

You can find out who all of the prizewinners were in the story on our website. We know that winning a WMS prize can be incredibly meaningful and influential, particularly to some of our early to mid-career researchers and myologists from around the world.

Join the WMS Programme Committee
Every three years, we invite WMS members to apply to join our Programme Committee. The Committee is responsible for the WMS Congress programme and is involved in selecting the topics and speakers and reviewing abstracts. The Programme Committee will meet virtually on 3 December and in person in mid-May 2026.

If you would be interested in joining, please complete this expression of interest form. And if you can't decide, we recommend watching this short video featuring some of our current and recent Committee members talking about their experiences.

The WMS SEED Programme
Our Strengthening Education for Equity Development (SEED) programme is an initiative designed by WMS members to foster sustainable regional expertise and develop and strengthen the skills, knowledge, abilities, processes, and resources that individuals, institutions or communities need to achieve their goals and thrive.

With the support of the WMS Executive Board, the team behind the initiative will be seeking to set up a pilot project in the new year. We will be sharing regular updates, but you can find out more on the website

MYO-MRI+
The fifth MYO-MRI+ International Imaging in Neuromuscular Disease Conference (MYO-MRI+ 2025 Conference) will take place at Langenbeck-Virchow-Haus in Berlin, Germany from 9-11 November 2025.

It is still possible to register for virtual attendance and gain access to all the scientific presentations throughout the three days. You can find more information, including details of how to register, on the MYO-MRI+ website.

November Myology Café
Our Myology Café is back on 20 November from 13:00 (GMT) with a guest speaker from the Aga Khan university in Pakistan. Sara Khan is also the organiser of the 23rd AOMC Annual Congress, which will take place from 6-8 November in Karachi, Pakistan.

Sara will talk about the highlights of the Congress and attendees will discuss this and other myology-related subjects.

The Myology Café is an informal, online meeting of myologists from all over the world who want to grow their knowledge and networks. Sign up on our website.

Publication highlight
Our latest publication highlight comes from Tasneem Al Mudarris, who as reviewed a paper by Hichem Tasfaout and his team at the Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, USA. The paper study looked at using full-length dystrophin to reverse muscular dystrophy defects in young and old mice.

You can read Tasneem's full review in the story on our website and see our full back-catalogue of publication highlights.

Directories
As part of our efforts to bring together our global community, we have both a community directory and a patient advocacy group directory on our website. WMS members can submit their own organisations to these directories.

We have also recently created a directory for case discussions. We are working to populate the page with regular and upcoming case discussions and encourage members to add the details for any relevant groups they are involved with.

Save the date for WMS 2026
Our next WMS Congress will take place in Hiroshima, Japan from 29 September to 3 October. The 2026 Pre-Congress Teaching Course will take place on 28 and 29 September in the same location.

We will be sharing details about how to register in the new year. Registration is likely to open in the spring and WMS members will be the first to hear about registration going live.

In the meantime, we will be adding information to the WMS 2026 website as it becomes available.

We always welcome your feedback and ideas. If you have something to say about the WMS and our communications, please complete our short feedback survey.
