Welcome to your June update from the World Muscle Society

We have a very full newsletter for you this month. We have been able to include reports from two of the international congresses that we have supported through our project proposals process. It's a real privilege to be able to support projects around the world.

Next up, we're appealing for new members for two of our committees, our Social Media Committee and our Sustainability Committee. The time commitments for each are fairly light, but we need more input from WMS members. You can find the link to sign up in the stories below.

And if you missed the FSHD Awareness Day coverage on our website and social media, I encourage you to catch up with the engaging profiles of WMS members working to improve care and treatment for patients with this currently incurable disease.

In WMS Congress news, it's great to see that our meeting in Prague will have a truly global audience. We have awarded fellowships to people from 33 countries, accepted abstracts from people from 46 countries and welcomed registrations from people in 54 countries. Take a look at the infographics at the end of this email to see where in the world everyone is from.

The global reach of the Congress is a real testament to the quality of the work we showcase and how highly people in our field value attendance. If you haven't registered yet, it's not too late. You have missed out on early bird prices, but have until 11th September to register.

As always, we rely on members, to share news about what you're working on so we can tell others. Please do contact us

I wish you the very best.

We’re currently recruiting additional members for our Social Media Committee. This is the first time in two years that we have opened up for additional members and we’re keen to find WMS champions who are passionate about the work we do and want to help increase our reach.

Find full details, including how to apply, on our website.

We're also looking for new members for our Sustainability Committee. You'll need to be able to commit to a one hour meeting each month and bring your enthusiasm and ideas for creating a more sustainable WMS.

Find full details, including how to apply, on our website.

The Australasian Neuromuscular Network (ANN) held its Congress at the end of last month with the support of the WMS.

We have a full report on the event from Dr Rachel Kennedy, a neuromuscular physiotherapist and clinician-researcher, Royal Children’s Hospital and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Melbourne on our website.

Take a look at the article online, and if you have a project that would benefit from WMS support, you can apply through our project proposals process.

Another project that benefitted from WMS funding was the 3rd MENA Congress on Neuromuscular & EDX in Morocco, which took place at the beginning of May.

This prestigious event brought together leading experts, clinicians, and emerging talents from around the world, fostering a rich exchange of knowledge and collaboration.

Once again we have a full report on our website.

The two events above were both sponsored by the WMS through our project proposals project. The next deadline for Project Proposal submissions is 19th August. We will share the outcomes by 1st November.

We want to break down the barriers to access for our community and ensure that scientists around the world can network, learn from one another, share science and publish their work.

To find out how to apply, please visit the Project Proposals page of our website

On 20th June we celebrated World FSHD Awareness Day. We used the opportunity to create profiles of some of our members who have specialised in FSHD care and research and shared their profiles on our website and social media channels.

You can read the full story on our website.

Coming up in September, we have awareness days for Duchenne, LGMD and Myotonic Dystrophy. If you work in these areas and would like to be involved in our celebrations, please email [email protected].

Dates For Your Diary
You can register now for the July Myology Café, which will take place on Thursday 25th July. The Myology Café will feature Dr Imelda de Groot, Program Leader at The Accredited Duchenne Centers Program, who will give an overview and update on the Program.

And if language has ever been a barrier to you joining one of our virtual Myology Cafés you might like to know that in the last Café, we trialled the digital live translation tool, Wordly, which we will now have available at all future Myology Cafés.

The deadline for letters of intent to bid to host the 2028 WMS Congress is coming around fast.

We have already received some expressions of interest and are keen to hear from anyone who would like to host a future Congress.

You have until 15th July to submit your letter and details of what's required are available on our website.
