Welcome to your July newsletter from the World Muscle Society

It is 30 years now since Victor Dubowitz brought together the group of people who created the World Muscle Society. At that first meeting, which took place in London, 15 people working in the field of neuromuscular disorders, representing eight nations across four continents, came together to create a new international muscle society with the aim of arranging frequent, interdisciplinary meetings.

Just four years later, I attended my first WMS Congress and I am very proud to be leading the Society in through our 30th anniversary.

We have come a long way in the intervening decades, and this was brought home to me at the Executive Board meeting earlier this month. We invited each of the WMS committee chairs to come to the meeting and present an update on the work they're doing. It was truly inspiring to hear from so many dedicated and passionate people about each committee's work and future plans.

Among the presentations, we heard from Teresa Gerhalter from the Sustainability Committee about the progress we're making to reduce our environmental footprint while learning more about the impact of environmental factors on the development of NMDs. We heard from Lindsay Alfano about the ongoing work of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee to ensure all voices are heard and all backgrounds are represented in everything we do.

The longest presentation was from Hernán Gonorazky, who talked about our newly created Regional Networks (find out more below), and an emerging initiative to support a series of developmental fellowships in each of our geographical regions. It is thanks to the last 30 years of growing the Society that we are in a financial position to be able to make this substantial investment and I look forward to sharing more details with you very soon.

My thanks to all of the committee chairs and members who are working so hard and achieving so much. We are always looking for more members to join our committees, so if you feel you can contribute, please get in touch.

If getting more involved in the work of the WMS is something you're interested in, don't forget, nominations are open for our 2025 Executive Board election. You have until 22nd August to put yourself forward. Voting will take place in September in time to introduce our newly elected Executive Board at WMS 2025. You'll find the full election guidelines on the website.

As always, we value your feedback, so don't hesitate to get in touch.

With best wishes,

Volker Straub
WMS President

2025 Executive Board election

There is just under one month to submit your nomination to be included in the election for the next WMS Executive Board. To learn more about how we currently prioritise early to mid-career members, have a look on our website.

To find out what some of our current Executive Board members think of being a Board member, you can still watch our election video

The realities of myology around the world

One of our focus areas in recent years has been the development of regional networks. The subject was one of our WMS 2024 topics and we have a dedicated Myology Developments Across the World Committee working to share information and learning.

At WMS 2024, Jordi Diaz Manera sat down with Jorge Bevilacqua to discuss the challenges for researchers, clinicians and patients in the field of neuromuscular disorders. The resulting video provides an enlightening insight into the regional differences in resources, care, research and possibilities.

WMS Regional Networks

We are very proud to officially launch our WMS Regional Networks. Designed to bring together clinicians and researchers within geographical regions, several of our Regional Networks have each had their inaugural meetings, have agreed priority projects focusing on regional education and research and are now looking for more members to support their growth.

Our networks are: Africa and the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, Eastern Europe, Europe, Latin America, and North America

You can find out more about our Regional Networks on our website.

Latest recruitment

With our Regional Networks now established to support inter-regional education and research we are looking for Regional Network Leads for our Europe and Eastern Europe networks. They will work alongside our other Regional Network Leads: Rasha el Sherif (Africa and the Middle East), Wen-Chen Liang (Asia and Oceania), Jorge Alfredo Bevilacqua (Latin America) and Megan Waldrop (North America).

The Europe role will be slightly different from other regions, as there are several existing European Networks, so the WMS European Network will focus on signposting and coordinating with existing regional initiatives. The Eastern European Lead will take a bigger role in creating some of these opportunities.

If you are interested in the role, please contact Sadie Tyler-Sibbald by emailing [email protected].

Introducing new committee members

Following news of our latest Guidelines Committee recruit, Hani Kushlaf, in last month's newsletter, we're bringing you news of two new WMS committee members this month.

Haicui Wang, who leads a research group on rare disease models at the Leibniz Institute DSMZ in Braunschweig, Germany, joined our Sustainability Committee. Paul Pritikanta, a neuromuscular neurologist and Assistant Professor at University of California San Francisco, joined our Featured Cases Committee

Our committees are passionate and enthusiastic groups who are always seeking more members to help bring new ideas and share the responsibilities. If you are interested in joining one of our committees, please email [email protected]

WMS 2025
We are continuing to invite abstracts on three sustainability subtopics:
  • Sustainable medical technologies or practices for muscle health
  • Eco-friendly rehabilitation/research methods
  • The impact of environmental factors on musculoskeletal health

Submissions for these sustainability-related abstract topics have an extended deadline, which coincides with the late-breaking news abstract deadline of 31st August.

We have already received more than 1,000 registrations from people joining us in Vienna, Austria for our 30th annual, international Congress. Registration remains open, but some networking events are already full. We encourage early registration to avoid disappointment.

Find out more and register on the Congress website

Each year at the Congress, we showcase the exciting, recent, and (ideally) unpublished findings on any aspect of neuromuscular disorders. Now is the time to submit your late-breaking abstracts
Our Programme Committee will select six submissions to be presented orally and additional submissions to be presented as posters.

If you have already registered to join us in Vienna for WMS 2025, you will recieve an email in the coming days with your unique submission link. The portal will open on 1st August and close on 31st August.

Jobs

Don't forget you can always find the latest vacancies in the field of neuromuscular disorders on the WMS website.

If you are recruiting a vacant post, you can also post the details of your vacancy and we will share the details with WMS audiences.

You can find all the information you need on the jobs page of the WMS website

Events

We are receiving an increasing number of events listings for the events page of our website. We host details of relevant events all over the world and across the neuromuscular disorders field, so don't forget to visit the page regularly.

If you are hosting an event, you can submit a listing to the WMS website by visiting the events page and clicking the "submit event" button.

Directories
As part of our efforts to bring together our global community, we have both a community directory and a patient advocacy group directory on our website. WMS members can submit their own organisations to these directories.

Patient advocacy groups can also apply to attend the WMS Congress as exhibitors

We have also recently created a directory for case discussions. We are working to populate the page with regular and upcoming case discussions and encourage members to add the details for any relevant groups they are involved with.
We always welcome your feedback and ideas. If you have something to say about the WMS and our communications, please complete our short feedback survey.
