Welcome to your February newsletter from the World Muscle Society

Our 30th annual Congress will take place in Vienna, Austria and will build on our recent successes in Halifax, Charleston and Prague. Our organising team has been reading and reviewing all the feedback from WMS 2024 to make sure our anniversary meeting is even better than anything we have done before. We are almost ready to open registrations and are looking forward to another great Congress.

One thing you can count on is our commitment to making WMS 2025 our most environmentally sustainable Congress so far. As a member of the WMS Sustainability Committee it has been fascinating to attend the latest workshops with our appointed sustainability consultants, Curve. We have been talking about what our sustainability goals should be, how we understand our current performance and the steps we can take to improve. I look forward to sharing our plan with you later in the year.

You can read an interview with our Sustainability Committee Chair, Teresa Gerhalter, below.

In this newsletter, you'll find a link to the recording of our latest Myology Café. This special edition featured an interview with Nathalie Goemans and a debate on Duchenne muscular dystrophy with Michela Guglieri and Liesbeth de Waele, moderated by Jordi Diaz Manera. It's a fascinating session and if you have an interest in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, I highly recommend taking an hour to catch up on it.

We've also included our usual features, including our latest publication highlight, upcoming events and a link to our jobs postings. We always welcome your feedback on our newsletters, so if there's something you'd like us to cover, please get in touch

Myology Café

Our latest Myology Café saw us try something a little different. We have been trying to organise an interview with Nathalie Goemans for a while to discuss her fascinating career and decided to try using the Myology Café as an opportunity to have that conversation.

For the first time ever, we recorded the Myology Café and are pleased to be able to share the recording with you. Alongside Michela Guglieri and Liesbeth De Waele, Nathalie talks about her career, recent developments in Duchenne muscular dystrophy and the prospects for new drugs and treatments for patients.

An interview with Teresa Gerhalter

As our Sustainability Committee has started working with sustainability consultants to help define our ambitions, we wanted to find out more about our Sustainability Committee Chair, Teresa Gerhalter.

Learn about Teresa's career in neuromuscular disorders and what motivates her to get involved in our sustainability work in our interview on our website

Project proposals

We are committed to continually developing the field of neuromuscular disorders through clinical research and patient care. We want to break down the barriers to access for our community and ensure that scientists around the world can network, learn from one another, share science and publish their work.

As a demonstration of our commitment to achieve this, we actively encourage all WMS members to submit project proposals for funding and broader support.

The next deadline for submissions is 24th March 2025. You can find out more on our website.

Publication highlights

Our latest publication highlight is now available to read on the WMS website. In it, Jantima Tanboon summarises a recent study titled Unravelling calcium dysregulation and autoimmunity in immune mediated rippling muscle disease.

The original study is by Samir Nath.

WMS 2025

Registration will open very soon. To help you start planning your visit to WMS 2025, we have published our summary programme

The summary programme includes our three Congress topics as well as information about our invited speakers.

We are very much looking forward to bringing you these presentations which represent the very latest knowledge in our field.

If you are planning on submitting an abstract for WMS 2025, you have until 10th April to make your submission.

We have detailed submission guidelines on the Congress website and plenty of advice on what to do if your work is selected for presentation at WMS 2025.

Our Programme Committee will meet in May to review all the submissions.

Are you an early career member? Would you like to help us shape a Congress session for people like you?

We are currently looking for volunteers to give us their thoughts on a session at WMS 2025 for early career myologists.

If you would be interested in participating, please email our Speaker and Programme Manager to let us know.
