Welcome to your December newsletter from the World Muscle Society

Our 30th anniversary year has been a real milestone in the Society’s history and I am looking forward to what the 30 coming years will bring, of course beyond Victor’s 100th, 110th and 120th birthdays.

The new Executive Board will meet early in the new year to review the work we have done and the work we want to do. We will continue to focus on increasing access to networks for those working as researchers and clinicians in the field of neuromuscular disorders all over the world. We need to reshape and re-design the existing committees and potentially initiate new ones, so if you have any ideas you would like the Board to consider, or if there is a committee you would like to be part of, feel free to have a look at the existing committee on the website and to let us know.

As WMS members, you have exclusive access to both the WMS 2025 photo library and the educational content from the Congress. To find the photo library, please visit your profile on the WMS website. To access the educational content from WMS 2025, you can continue to use the Congress virtual platform until 13 January, after which, you will be able to find it in the Education and Development Opportunities section of the WMS website

I also need to inform you about a change coming in the new year. The WMS Executive Board and Elsevier have been in discussions for several years regarding the printed journals for WMS members and how the logistics of printing and delivery impact the Society's sustainability and financial objectives.

With this in mind, we have agreed that Elsevier will stop printing copies of the journals from 1 January 2026. Whilst recognising that some of our valued members prefer to receive a hard copy of the journal, the overall majority of our members now receive a digital version. It is no longer viable for Elsevier to produce printed copies and deliver worldwide. We will be contacting the members directly affected by this change.

We appreciate this may not be welcome news, especially for those like me, who can’t travel without an edition of Neuromuscular Disorders in their backpack, but please be assured that this decision was not taken lightly. We hope you will understand it was taken in the best interests of the Society and of our global responsibilities. I think it’s good advice to keep all your printed copies. In 75 years they will be collectors items and could generate substantial revenues for your team!

I look forward to working with you in 2026 and beyond. I wish a pleasant festive season for those who celebrate and more importantly, I wish all of you a 2026 vintage that surpasses your craziest expectations.

Kindest regards,

Laurent Servais
WMS President
WMS Regional Networks
Our regional networking session at WMS 2025 was very popular, with delegates from all over the world joining to share their experiences. You can find out more about the Regional Networks on our website and by watching the video below.

We are still seeking a European Network Lead to take over from Teresinha Evangelista, who kindly agreed to cover the role until we could find a permanent replacement. If you would like to be considered for the role, please email [email protected].

The WMS SEED Programme
Our Strengthening Education for Equity Development (SEED) programme is an initiative designed by WMS members to foster sustainable regional expertise and develop and strengthen the skills, knowledge, abilities, processes, and resources that individuals, institutions or communities need to achieve their goals and thrive.

We are seeking input from potential host institutions for a pilot programme. Please help us by taking a few moments to identify your areas of regional interest by completing this survey. Your input will directly help us shape the programme and its activities.

January Myology Café
The next Myology Café will take place on 22 January at 10:00 (GMT). Our guest speaker will be Miriam Rodrigues, Neurogenetic Research Lead, Te Toka Tumai, Auckland (Health New Zealand) who will share her experience and give a talk on the TREAT-NMD registries. Everyone is welcome to join this virtual session. You can register on our website.

The November Myology Café took place on 20 November and featured a presentation from Sara Kahn, Associate Professor, Section of Neurology, Department of Medicine, The Aga Khan University, Pakistan, and organiser of the 23rd AOMC Annual Congress on 6-8 November in Karachi, Pakistan. Sara gave an overview of the organisation and shared the highlights and summary of the Congress.

WMS member registry
In line with other member organisations, we have discussed publishing a list of our members to help find one another. We have set up a system that enables you to opt into having your name and country published in this list.

To opt in, please visit your member profile. In the “actions” section, you will see “member list” as one of the options. When you open the list, you will see the option to publish your name at the top of the page.

Publication highlight
Our latest publication highlight comes from Josine de Winter, who has reviewed a paper by Tokunbor Lawal and his team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center (Bethesda, MD). USA. The paper looked at targeting NAD+-deficiency to improve bioenergetics in RYR1-related myopathies.

You can read Josine's full review in the story on our website and see our full back-catalogue of publication highlights.

Directories
As part of our efforts to bring together our global community, we have developed a series of directories to connect people:

Save the date for WMS 2026
Our next WMS Congress will take place in Hiroshima, Japan from 29 September to 3 October. The 2026 Pre-Congress Teaching Course will take place on 28 and 29 September in the same location.

Our Programme Committee met earlier this month and we're looking forward to bringing you programme details in the new year.

Registration is likely to open in the spring and WMS members will be the first to hear about registration going live.

In the meantime, we will be adding information to the WMS 2026 website as it becomes available.
Our Local Organising Co-Chairs, Ichizo Nishino and Takashi Kurashige describe their ambitions for WMS 2026 in this video.

We always welcome your feedback and ideas. If you have something to say about the WMS and our communications, please complete our short feedback survey.
