Call for Early-Stage Editorial Positions

Applications Sought for Neuromuscular Disorders (NMD)

DEADLINE: 28 February 2026

As part of the restructured editorial leadership of Neuromuscular Disorders (NMD), we invite applications for two editorial positions designated for investigators at earlier stages of their independent careers (defined as less than 10 years from their initial academic appointment).

These positions are intended for clinicians, clinician-scientists, or scientists who are actively contributing to the neuromuscular field and who bring contemporary perspectives, methodological expertise, and strong engagement with emerging areas of research. We are particularly committed to ensuring that the editorial board reflects the global neuromuscular community and strongly encourage applications from regions of the world not previously or prominently represented in NMD editorial leadership. We also encourage senior faculty to actively support and encourage self-nomination by junior colleagues who would be strong candidates for these roles.

Appointees will serve a two-year term and will participate fully in the editorial process, including manuscript assessment, peer-review oversight, and strategic discussions regarding the journal’s direction. For these early-stage associate editor positions, workload will be tailored to accommodate the competing demands of junior faculty and emerging investigators.

Role and Responsibilities

Editors in these positions will:

  • Handle submitted manuscripts within the field of neuromuscular disease
  • Participate in editorial discussions related to peer review, journal scope, and policy
  • Contribute to maintaining rigor, fairness, and transparency in the review process
  • Provide input on emerging areas of neuromuscular research and evolving scientific practices

These roles are designed to foster bidirectional exchange—integrating new perspectives into the journal while providing meaningful editorial experience within an established leadership structure.

Eligibility

Applicants should:

  • Be at an early stage of an independent academic or research career (<10 years from initial appointment; flexibility and judgment will be applied rather than a strict cutoff)
  • Have demonstrated emerging scholarship and promise in neuromuscular medicine or related fields
  • Have experience with peer review as an author and/or reviewer
  • Have a clean ethical record, with no instances of scientific misconduct
  • Be committed to scientific rigor, collegiality, and service to the neuromuscular community

Application Process

Interested individuals should submit:

  • A brief letter of interest outlining relevant expertise and motivation (≤500 words)
  • A current curriculum vitae
  • Names of two individuals who can attest to the applicant’s academic rigor and trajectory in neuromuscular medicine (letters are not required; references may include collaborators, colleagues, or mentors)

Applications will be accepted through the end of February. Materials will be reviewed by the Editor-in-Chief in consultation with the editorial leadership, with the goal of completing the selection process and filling the positions by March 31. Appointment decisions will reflect scientific expertise, diversity of perspective, and alignment with the journal’s mission.
