7th Moroccan Congress of Clinical Neurophysiology & 1st African - MENA School on Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic

7th Moroccan Congress of Clinical Neurophysiology & 1st African - MENA School on Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic

Neuromuscular disorders (NMDs) encompass a wide range of diseases that affect peripheral nerves or muscles. They share overlapping but distinct phenotypes, as well as distinct pathogenic mechanisms, clinical manifestation, and disease progression. Depending on the rate of onset of respiratory muscle weakness, symptoms vary. Lesions can occur in cell bodies, the neuromuscular junction, axons, Schwann cells, and muscle, or in any combination of these locations. NMDs are difficult to diagnose because there are numerous potential injury sites. Many peripheral nervous system (PNS) disorders manifest with muscle atrophy, distal sensory loss, and/or diminished tendon reflexes. Few mutations have been identified in this context, particularly in North African countries where consanguinity is prevalent and access to diagnosis and health care is limited.

Numerous comorbid organ disorders frequently accompany neuromuscular disorders. They are frequently underdiagnosed, undertreated, and associated with decreased treatment adherence, functional status, and quality of life, as well as delayed diagnosis of neurological impairment by aggravating the associated disability.

Given the prevalence of neuromuscular diseases in our context, which has resulted from the phenomenon of consanguinity, it is necessary to bring together all health professionals, including neurologists, cardiologists, rehabilitation physicians, psychologists, and others, in order to acquire sufficient and comprehensive knowledge for a multidisciplinary approach to the management of patients with neuromuscular diseases.

These disorders are frequently encountered in neurology, pediatrics, psychiatry, general and family medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pneumology, cardiology, and other disciplines, and they present a health problem for the health care system, necessitating their early treatment and discussion of their diagnostic difficulties. With its innovative practice guidelines and therapeutics, the field of neuromuscular diseases is an ideal topic for continuing medical education.

In this regard,The Moroccan Society of Clinical Neurophysiology, in collaboration with the Moroccan Society of Psychiatry, the Moroccan Society of Radiology, and the Moroccan Association for Child Nervous System Diseases (SMMSNE), will host an international educational event on diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to neuromuscular diseases. These courses will be recognized as the First African- MENA School of Neuromuscular Diseases & Electrodiagnostic and will be held in Marrakech from June 2nd – 4th , 2023, with the participation of a distinguished panel of national and international experts. This event's scientific program provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for young African & MENA clinicians who face neuromuscular pathologies in their daily practice to receive in-depth instruction from internationally renowned experts.

This multidisciplinary course is intended for health care providers who treat patients with neuromuscular disorders, including neurophysiologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, physical and rehabilitation physicians, family physicians, and primary care providers, as well as allied health care personnel interested in these topics. This is a must-attend event featuring internationally renowned experts in the field of nerve and muscle diseases who will present both theoretical lectures and case-based workshops focusing on different approaches to the management of these conditions. Case-based scenarios and clinical experiences will be used to illustrate the most recent developments in practice and research.

Throughout this course, we anticipate hosting a few (2) sessions for technologists and nurses which will cover the fundamentals of performing the typical operational duties of a nurse and rehabilitator of patients with neuromuscular diseases. These health care professionals will be able to understand the responsibilities and scope of the technician and nurse in a multidisciplinary facility for neuromuscular diseases, as well as provide patient education on the fundamentals of these conditions and any tasks that may be necessary.
