Introduction

I am Ichizo Nishino, a physician scientist, based in Tokyo. I am a neurologist by training and have been focusing on muscle disease reseaerch for more than 20 years since the completion of initial 5 years' clinical neurology training.

I have been a WMS's Executive Board member since 2010 when I co-hosted the annual meeting of WMS in Kumamoto together with Prof. Ikuya Nonaka. Now I am scheduled to organize another annual meeting of WMS in Hiroshima, Japan in 2024. I would like to continue to be in the board to make the upcoming meeting surely successful.

 

Biography

Dr. Ichizo Nishino is Director of Department of Neuromuscular Research, National Institute of Neuroscience, National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry (NCNP), Kodaira, Tokyo, Japan. He obtained his M.D. in 1989 and Ph.D. in 1998 from Kyoto University. After 5 years of training in clinical neurology and 6 years of research fellowship, including 2 years at Columbia University, he was appointed to his current position in 2001.

Currently, Dr. Nishino is a Visiting Professor at 6 universities: University of Yamanashi, Shinshu University, Kaohsiung Medical University (Taiwan), Fu Jen Catholic University (Taiwan), Peking University First Hospital (China), and Siriraj Hospital Mahidol University (Thailand).

Dr. Nishino has been a WMS's Executive Board member since 2010. He is also serving as President of Asian-Oceanian Myology Center and Executive Board member in several domestic acaemic societies including Japanese Society of Neurology and Japan Muscle Society.

His laboratory functions as a nationwide referral center for muscle disease, providing diagnostic analyses for muscle pathology and genetics. His lab receives more than 70% of muscle biopsies performed in Japan (1103 cases in 2021) and he signs out all cases. As a result, more than 22,000 frozen muscle biopsy samples have been accumulated in his muscle repository, which is one of the largest collections of the patient’s muscles.
