Career summary
I am an Assistant Professor at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Rome, Italy) in the Department of Child Neurology and Psychiatry, where I lead clinical and research activities focused on paediatric neuromuscular disorders. I work at the Paediatric Clinical Centre "Nemo" and the Child Neurology and Psychiatry unit of the University Polyclinic A. Gemelli, specialising in the care and rehabilitation of children with conditions such as SMA and DMD. Over the past decade, I have built a career at the intersection of clinical neurorehabilitation and research, contributing as principal investigator, subinvestigator and clinical evaluator in numerous phase 1–3 clinical trials and natural history studies. My expertise extends beyond outcome measures to encompass comprehensive rehabilitation strategies, including motor function, fatigue, posture, respiratory care, and patient-centred therapy planning. My work supports the integration of personalised rehabilitation into evolving treatment landscapes shaped by disease-modifying therapies. I have authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, with more than 2,800 citations and an h-index of 31, and I regularly contribute to international collaborations and expert panels. At age 33, I continue to build a career that bridges clinical practice and translational research. My scientific contributions have been recognised through multiple national awards and prizes. Most recently, I was awarded a competitive grant from the Italian Ministry of Health to lead a national research project utilising artificial intelligence in clinical data modelling and decision-making for SMA. Through my dual roles in clinical care and translational research, I remain committed to advancing innovative approaches that improve quality of life and long-term outcomes for children with neuromuscular disorders.
What is the personal or professional achievement you’re most proud of?
What I consider my greatest professional achievement is my pivotal role in advancing research and clinical trials, particularly through studies that contributed to the study of transformative therapies for children with neuromuscular disorders. As a rehabilitation professional, I have successfully integrated clinical practice with innovative research, providing a multidisciplinary perspective that has directly improved patient outcomes. Beyond my research accomplishments and international collaborations, I have taken on leadership roles within clinical and research teams, fostering collaboration across disciplines to enhance both scientific discovery and patient care. I am also deeply committed to mentoring emerging professionals, supporting their development to ensure the field’s continued growth. As an Italian therapist achieving significant impact despite the complexities of our academic system, I view this success not only as a personal milestone but as a testament to the potential of healthcare professionals in Italy to contribute globally.
Why did you first join the WMS?
My decision to become a WMS member stemmed from my desire to connect with an international network committed to improving neuromuscular disorder care, research, and comprehension. During the early stages of my career, I recognised the critical importance of collaborative efforts and shared knowledge in paediatric neuromuscular medicine—a field characterised by its complexity and rapid advancement. What drew me to the WMS was its unique ability to unite established experts with emerging researchers while emphasising multidisciplinary approaches, which aligns perfectly with how I practice clinically and conduct research.
What is your goal in joining the Executive Board?
My goal in joining the World Muscle Society Executive Board is to actively advance the global exchange and application of neuromuscular knowledge, from basic research to clinical care and rehabilitation. I am committed to enhancing the Society’s mission of fostering collaboration among clinicians, researchers, patients, and industry, ensuring that scientific advances translate into effective therapies and comprehensive rehabilitation strategies. As a rehabilitation professional with expertise in paediatric neuromuscular conditions, I bring experience bridging clinical care with innovative research methodologies, including emerging digital health technologies such as artificial intelligence. My multidisciplinary background offers a unique perspective that complements the diverse expertise needed on an effective Executive Board. The inclusion of rehabilitation professionals alongside clinicians and researchers is essential for ensuring that the Society's initiatives address the full spectrum of patient needs, from diagnosis through long-term functional outcomes. I am particularly motivated to support the Society's knowledge dissemination efforts, professional development programmes, and mentorship initiatives for emerging practitioners. Additionally, I want to champion patient-centred rehabilitation models and expand global access to neuromuscular expertise and resources. I view this role as an opportunity to serve the neuromuscular community by facilitating comprehensive, evidence-driven knowledge sharing that addresses both clinical complexities and quality-of-life challenges. This includes advocating for integrated rehabilitation approaches that encompass physical, functional, and psychosocial needs throughout the patient journey, ensuring that the Society's mission truly serves the diverse needs of individuals living with neuromuscular disorders.
