Career summary
In addition to my regular university life, I serve as an associate editor of Neuromuscular Disorders and a member of the editorial boards of Current Opinion in Neurology and the European Journal of Neurology. I became a fellow of the EAN in 2017 and serve as a board member of the Educational Panel, Rare Disease Panel, Scientific Muscle and Neuromuscular Panel, and Rare Disease Panel of the EAN. I served as the co-chair of the Joint Educational Board of the EAN/UEMS and was the organiser of the European Neurology board exam. I am a long-term member of the World Muscle Society, having served on the WMS executive board for the past three years and organised the WMS teaching course for the past decade. Since 2015, I chaired the European Pompe Consortium (EPOC). I am a member of the ERN network. Since 2024, I have been chair of the scientific advisory board of EuroDyMA. I authored more than 375 peer-reviewed publications (>85 in the field of myotonic dystrophies, >80 in glycogen storage diseases) in clinical and translational science. I have served as the principal investigator of multiple clinical trials since 2005. My special interests are multisystemic neuromuscular disorders, translational research, and molecular therapy.
What is the personal or professional achievement you’re most proud of?
As a researcher and doctor, I have played a small role in transforming the principles of medical science into therapies for diseases that were once considered untreatable during my lifetime.
Why did you first join the WMS?
To learn, understand, connect with others, help, and deliver privileged knowledge back to patients and caregivers.
What is your goal in joining the Executive Board?
To help guide and connect WMS members for the next decade of NMD understanding and therapy. This includes providing global access to new and affordable treatments for everyone while integrating new technologies, such as AI, in a fair and equitable manner for all stakeholders in a truly global and democratic shared decision-making process.
