Education summary
I hold a PhD in Clinical Neurosciences from UCLouvain (Belgium), awarded in 2024 for my research on the neuroimmunological mechanisms underlying Duchenne muscular dystrophy and the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. I previously completed both my Bachelor and Master in Medicine at UCLouvain (2006–2013). My academic formation has been complemented by specialized training in neuromuscular disorders at Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc under the mentorship of Professor Peter Van den Bergh, as well as by international clinical fellowships in neuroimmunology at the Blizard Institute (Queen Mary University of London). I also pursued advanced courses in neuromuscular ultrasound and clinical electrophysiology at the University Medical Center Utrecht. I am currently continuing my academic development through postdoctoral research at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Oxford, where I lead a project on the immunopathogenesis of GM1 neuropathies.
Career summary
I am a medical doctor and neuroimmunology researcher with a strong clinical and scientific focus on neuromuscular and neuroimmunological disorders. My career has evolved through roles in prominent academic centers in Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK, where I have combined clinical practice with translational research. I have contributed to several peer-reviewed publications, presented at international conferences, and secured competitive research funding in recognition of the translational impact of my work. Alongside my current postdoctoral position at the University of Oxford, where I lead a research program investigating the pathophysiology and potential therapeutic targets in GM1 neuropathies, I continue to be actively involved at Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc (Brussels), where I co-lead the Neuromuscular Reference Center. This dual engagement allows me to maintain strong clinical ties while advancing research at the international level. At the conclusion of my postdoctoral fellowship, I will return full-time to Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc to establish a neuroimmunology laboratory dedicated to neuromuscular disorders and to assume the clinical leadership of the Neuromuscular Reference Center.
What is the personal or professional achievement you’re most proud of?
One of the personal achievements I’m most proud of is balancing a demanding career in medical research with being an active and engaged husband and parent of three young children. Managing to contribute significantly to advancing neurology research while supporting and nurturing my family has been incredibly rewarding and has taught me valuable lessons in resilience, time management, and prioritizing what truly matters. The professional achievement I’m most proud of is successfully completing my PhD, which focused on the neuroimmunological mechanisms underlying Duchenne muscular dystrophy and the development of innovative treatments. This work has laid important groundwork, and I am hopeful that the molecules we tested will soon advance into phase 1-2 clinical trials. Completing this project was a major milestone that validated years of dedicated research and opened pathways for translating scientific discoveries into potential new treatments for patients.
Why did you first join the WMS?
I first joined the World Muscle Society because it represents the leading global community for clinicians and researchers dedicated to muscle diseases. As someone deeply invested in neuromuscular disorders through my research and clinical interests, I wanted to connect with like-minded experts, stay updated on the latest advances, and contribute to collaborative efforts that drive the field forward. The Society’s focus on both basic science and clinical care aligns perfectly with my goal to translate research into meaningful treatments for patients. Additionally, I have been really impressed by the atmosphere within the Society. It’s genuinely welcoming and supportive, with everyone eager to help and collaborate. There is a true spirit of teamwork and no sense of competition, which creates an ideal environment for sharing knowledge and advancing the field together. I particularly like the afternoon activities organized by the congress every year, as they provide a wonderful opportunity to build connections and foster informal collaboration among members.
What is your goal in joining the Executive Board?
My goal in joining the Executive Board of the World Muscle Society is to actively contribute to shaping the future direction of the Society and the field of neuromuscular research and care. As the junior representative, I want to serve as a strong voice for early-career researchers and clinicians, ensuring their needs and perspectives are well represented in the Society’s decisions. Specifically, I aim to push forward initiatives that support the professional development of young members, such as mentorship programs pairing junior researchers with experienced leaders, and expanded opportunities for funding and travel grants to attend key conferences. I would also advocate for enhanced platforms for junior members to present their work, including dedicated sessions at the annual congress. Additionally, I hope to promote more inclusive and accessible educational resources, such as online workshops and webinars, to foster continuous learning globally, especially for members from underrepresented regions. By driving these projects, I believe we can strengthen the next generation of neuromuscular experts and accelerate progress in both research and clinical care.
